Information checked October 15, 2026 (JST). This article covers announced plans for Harry Potter × JR Kyushu: Magical Journey. Train assignments, event arrangements and other details may change.
Where Will the Harry Potter Trains Run?
JR Kyushu will introduce Harry Potter designs on two types of limited express train. Their starting dates differ, and both are planned to operate until around June 2027.
| Train | Planned start | Examples of announced routes |
|---|---|---|
| 885 series | November 14, 2026 | Sonic toward Oita; Relay Kamome to Takeo-Onsen; Midori to Sasebo, from Hakata |
| 787 series | January 16, 2027 | Nichirin Seagaia between Hakata and Miyazaki Airport; Nichirin between Oita and the Miyazaki area |
These are operating-route examples, not a list of confirmed themed departures. A reservation on a Sonic or Midori service does not by itself confirm that you will travel on the Harry Potter train. Check the official wrapping-train page (Japanese) for the individual service information JR Kyushu says it will announce.

Availability of this launch train through JR Kyushu’s English-language booking system has not been confirmed. If you are booking at a counter, show the Japanese train name, travel date and departure time. Seats are subject to availability.
The announcement does not state a ticket price. Check the total for your boarding and arrival stations when booking. If you hold a rail pass, ask JR Kyushu about this specific service before relying on pass coverage.
Hogwarts Hour: Six Weekend Events
Hogwarts Hour will visit six station plazas on separate weekends. Choose the date and city that overlap with your route; the events do not run continuously throughout the campaign.
| Dates | City | Announced venue |
|---|---|---|
| December 12–13, 2026 | Nagasaki | Kamome Plaza, AMU Plaza Nagasaki |
| January 16–17, 2027 | Oita | Oita Station plaza |

JR Kyushu describes activities inspired by Quidditch, card-game experiences and workshops, with programs varying by venue. Opening hours, fees and any participation or registration requirements have not yet been detailed. Confirm these arrangements before making a special trip.
Station Displays, Stamps and Pop-Up Shops
Photo spots and decorations are planned for eight stations during the campaign: Hakata, Mojiko, Saga, Nagasaki, Oita, Kumamoto, Kagoshima-Chuo and Miyazaki. These provide another way to join in when your dates do not match an event weekend.
The stamp rally covers 21 stations across Kyushu’s seven prefectures. Collect a paper stamp booklet at a station and use the stamp stands inside the ticket gates. If you do not hold a valid ticket for entry, an 入場券 / Nyūjōken / Station admission ticket is required. At some stations, the stand will be inside either the conventional-line or the Shinkansen gates; ask staff which entrance to use.
The official stamp-rally page (Japanese) lists the participating stations. Exact stamp locations, prizes and application details are still to be announced.
Pop-up shops have been announced for AMU Plaza Nagasaki from December 12–27, 2026, and AMU Plaza Oita from January 16–February 7, 2027. The shop periods extend beyond the two-day events. Campaign merchandise will also be sold at the existing Mahou Dokoro pop-up in AMU EST from November 14.
Check the official Magical Journey campaign website (Japanese) for event details, further shop announcements and updates before visiting.
How to Fit the Campaign Into a Kyushu Trip
For most travelers already visiting Kyushu, the easiest approach is to add a station display or one city event to an existing route. Make the launch train the centerpiece only if its fixed date and direction fit your plans. If a later ride on the themed train is essential, wait for the departure details before committing to travel built around that service.
If you are starting in Fukuoka, our Fukuoka travel guide explains when to stay near Hakata Station and how much time to leave for the city. An event or train journey can be part of the trip while still leaving an evening for dinner and a walk near your accommodation.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I board the Harry Potter train in Tokyo or Osaka?
-
The announced campaign train routes are in Kyushu. Travel to Kyushu separately if you are arriving from another part of Japan.
- Do I need a seat reservation?
-
Yes for the November 14 launch train, which has no non-reserved seating. For later journeys, confirm the ticket and seating arrangements for the particular service once its themed-train operation is announced.
- Can I take part without riding a themed train?
-
Yes. You can plan around the station displays, city events or shops instead. Access to the stamp stands requires a valid ticket or station admission ticket because they are inside the gates.

-
No. The second train type starts in January, and the six event weekends run from December through May. Match your dates to the part of the campaign you want to experience.
