If you are planning to visit Universal Studios Japan this fall, there is an important ticket change to know before you buy.
For visits on or after September 1, 2026, you must specify your planned park date when purchasing a Studio Pass, USJ’s park admission ticket. USJ has also changed how Studio Pass prices are set for those dates, allowing daily prices to be reviewed and adjusted after tickets go on sale depending on demand.
The timing matters because Universal Studios Japan is about to enter its autumn event season, with Universal Extreme Autumn beginning September 10 and Halloween Horror Nights beginning September 11. If USJ is part of your fall itinerary, it is worth understanding the new ticket rules before you decide when to buy.
What Changed for USJ Studio Passes?
Universal Studios Japan announced that guests visiting the park on or after September 1, 2026 must specify their visit date when purchasing a Studio Pass.
The key point is that September 1 refers to the date you visit the park. For example, if you buy a ticket in August for a September 15 visit, you still need to select September 15 when you purchase the Studio Pass.
This does not necessarily mean your date can never change. Some unused admission tickets are eligible for a visit-date change when the applicable conditions are met.
What If You Already Bought a Studio Pass for September 1 or Later?
If you have already purchased a Studio Pass for a specific visit date on or after September 1, USJ says previously purchased tickets remain usable even if the price for your planned visit date later changes. You will not need to pay an additional amount simply because the price for that same date has increased.
If your existing ticket does not show a visit date, or you are unsure which conditions apply to it, check the ticket terms or confirm with the seller before you travel. USJ’s July 31 notice explains the new purchase rule for visits from September 1, but travelers with older or unusual ticket arrangements should verify the conditions that apply to their specific ticket.
Studio Pass Prices Can Also Change After Tickets Go on Sale
A separate pricing change applies to Studio Passes sold from July 1 for park visits from September 1, 2026.
USJ says it can review and adjust daily Studio Pass prices after tickets go on sale based on demand. Prices may increase, and the park recommends buying tickets as early as possible if your plans are decided.
This does not mean every date will become more expensive. It means the price available for a particular visit date can change as demand develops.
If you have already purchased your Studio Pass and the price for your planned visit date later increases, USJ says no additional payment is required.
The revised pricing system applies to park admission tickets other than Annual Passes. USJ says Universal Express Passes already use a similar pricing system and are not part of this particular change.
Why Travelers Should Care
For international travelers, Universal Studios Japan is often one day within a larger Kansai itinerary that may also include central Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, or Kobe.
If you previously planned to buy admission first and decide your exact USJ day later, the new rule changes that order. You now need to choose a visit date when purchasing your Studio Pass, while the price for that date may also change before you buy.
That makes your USJ day worth considering earlier, especially if you are traveling during popular periods or have limited flexibility in your Osaka schedule.

What You Should Do Before Buying
- Decide which day of your Osaka itinerary is most likely to work for Universal Studios Japan.
- Check the Studio Pass price for that date on the official ticket site.
- If your itinerary is flexible, compare nearby dates before purchasing.
- Once your plans are reasonably firm, consider purchasing rather than assuming the price will remain the same.
- If your travel dates may still change, check the date-change conditions for the exact ticket and purchase method before completing the transaction.
Studio Passes are date-specific under the new rule, and other ticket products can have different conditions. Check the official ticket page at the time you buy rather than relying on an earlier price or screenshot.
What If Your Travel Plans Change?
Some unused admission tickets are eligible for a date change when certain conditions are met. However, you should not assume every ticket or purchase method can be changed in exactly the same way. If the new visit date has a different price, a price difference will apply.
Tickets generally cannot be canceled after purchase unless legally recognized grounds for cancellation or invalidation apply. If flexibility matters to your trip, check the official date-change rules before buying.
The Change Arrives Just Before USJ’s Autumn Events
The new rules will apply throughout Universal Studios Japan’s main autumn event season.
Universal Extreme Autumn is scheduled for September 10 through November 8, 2026, while Halloween Horror Nights runs from September 11 through November 8.
If you are traveling to Osaka specifically for Halloween Horror Nights or another autumn event, decide your preferred park date before purchasing and check the current Studio Pass price for that date.
Remember that a regular Studio Pass does not necessarily cover every separately ticketed seasonal experience. Check the official page for any event or attraction you particularly want to attend.
